The subdivisions that filled in over the last twenty years, Millbridge and Cureton and Lawson among them, were built fast and sided in builder grade vinyl. That vinyl is now reaching the age where it fades unevenly, goes brittle on the sun struck walls, and starts letting go around windows and corner posts.
The larger lots out toward Marvin and Weddington carry more architectural detail: gable ends, wrapped columns, mixed profiles, deeper trim. Those homes are where fiber cement earns its keep, because the detail is the whole point and vinyl trim does not hold a crisp line the way Hardie trim does.
Then there are the older homes around downtown Waxhaw and off Providence Road, many of them wood sided, many of them fighting rot at the bottom courses and woodpeckers everywhere else.

Almost everyone inspects the roof after a hail storm. Almost nobody inspects the walls.
That is a problem around here, because Union County has taken two hits worth checking. On the afternoon of July 12, 2026 a severe thunderstorm crossed the county carrying quarter size hail and warned wind gusts near 60 mph through Waxhaw, Marvin, Weddington, and Wesley Chapel. Hail hits siding on an angle, so the damage concentrates on one or two elevations rather than spreading evenly the way it does across a roof. On vinyl you are looking for cracks radiating from an impact point, chips along the butt edge, and clean punched holes on the walls that faced the storm. On fiber cement it is bruising and chipped edges. Neither is easy to see from the driveway, which is exactly why it gets skipped.
Sun does its own slower version of the same thing. If your vinyl has gone chalky and faded on the south and west walls, that is a known failure pattern and we have written about sun damaged vinyl siding and when it needs replacing.
We install both and we are not incentivised to push you either way. The honest framing is that they solve different problems.
James Hardie fiber cement is the answer when the house has detail worth protecting, when you are staying put, or when the architectural review committee effectively decides for you. It carries a Class A fire rating, it does not feed woodpeckers or carpenter bees, and it holds a painted finish through Carolina summers that cook vinyl.

Hail damages siding regularly, and it gets missed more often than roof damage because nobody thinks to inspect a vertical surface. On vinyl it shows up as cracking, chipping, and punched holes concentrated on whichever elevation faced the storm. On fiber cement it reads as impact bruising and chipped edges. Often it does, and it is assessed separately from the roof. Sometimes, and we will tell you plainly when that is the honest answer. Swapping damaged boards works when the surrounding siding is sound and the product is still manufactured in your color. The catch is matching. Vinyl fades as it ages, and discontinued profiles and colors are common on homes built more than a decade ago, so a patched wall can end up reading as a patched wall.
