Old wood siding does not age well in Charlotte. Between humid summers, tropical rain that tracks up from the Gulf, and year-round termite pressure, wood absorbs moisture, warps, rots, and gives pests something to chew on. On a recent project in southwest Charlotte, near Steele Creek, a homeowner was watching exactly that happen. We replaced the whole system with James Hardie fiber cement, and the difference is the kind you can see from the street.
Here is how the project went, why James Hardie holds up in Carolina weather, and how to tell when it is time to replace your own siding.

The project: from tired wood siding to James Hardie board-and-batten
The existing wood siding had reached the end of its life, so a patch job was not going to protect the home. We handled it as a full exterior:
- Removed all of the old wood siding and the original house wrap.
- Inspected the wall sheathing and re-sheathed the walls with new OSB so the new siding had a sound, flat surface to fasten to.
- Installed a new house wrap as a fresh weather barrier behind the siding.
- Installed James Hardie board-and-batten siding, run vertically with battens for that clean, modern-farmhouse look, along with 5/4 corners and 4-inch trim.
- Finished the exterior with a new gutter system so water gets carried cleanly away from the new walls and the foundation.

The result is a home that looks brand new and is built to shrug off the weather that wore the old siding down.

Why James Hardie holds up in Charlotte
Charlotte throws a lot at a home: severe thunderstorms, hurricane remnants, heat indexes over 100 degrees, and termites that never really take a season off. James Hardie fiber cement is engineered for this climate.
It does not feed termites. Unlike wood, fiber cement gives termites nothing to eat.
It resists moisture. Fiber cement is built to stand up to humidity and heavy rain without rotting, swelling, or warping.
It is fire resistant. James Hardie fiber cement carries a Class A fire rating, the highest available, which matters in the Carolinas during dry spells.
It holds its look. Properly installed and finished, Hardie keeps its shape and finish far longer than wood, so you spend less time and money on upkeep.
Why board-and-batten
Board-and-batten runs the siding vertically with raised battens over the seams. It reads as clean and current, and it has become one of the most requested looks in the Charlotte area for both new farmhouse-style homes and older homes getting a facelift. This home already had a vertical board-and-batten look in aging wood, so we kept the character the owner loved and rebuilt it in James Hardie, trading the maintenance and rot of wood for a finish that lasts. Same style, far better material.
What separates a real siding job from a cheap one
Two siding quotes can look similar on paper and be very different on the wall. The difference is what happens behind the siding and who is installing it.
The prep is where corners get cut. Re-sheathing questionable walls with new OSB and installing a fresh house wrap are not glamorous line items, but they are what keep water out and give the siding something solid to hold. A low bid that skips this is not really the same job.
Installer matters as much as material. Fiber cement has to be fastened, spaced, and trimmed to James Hardie's specifications, or the manufacturer warranty can be at risk. Top Flight Contracting is a Proud James Hardie Alliance Contractor, which means our team has completed installation training directly from James Hardie and follows the specs that protect your investment and your warranty.
We also keep the site clean. We use trailers instead of dumpsters to protect your driveway, and we run a magnetic sweep for nails before we leave.
Signs it is time to replace your siding
You do not have to wait for a failure to act. Reach out if you notice:
- Warping, buckling, or boards pulling away from the wall
- Soft spots, rot, or areas that crumble when pressed
- Peeling or bubbling paint that keeps coming back
- Gaps at seams and trim where water and pests can get in
- Higher energy bills from a wall system that no longer seals well
- Faded, chalky, or dated siding that drags down the look of the home
Catching these early keeps a siding project from turning into a moisture or structural repair.
